On August 5, 2011, Maharaji arrived at the Shrine Auditorium — a well-known landmark in Los Angeles — for the first of two events. For well over an hour he spoke about the potential within each person, returning time and again to the metaphor of a desert: with regular rain even a desert will turn into a forest, he seemed to say.
Here are some excerpts from his talk:
If there isn’t the rain of gratitude on this field, it will remain a desert. If there isn’t the rain of that deep, beautiful experience of being alive, then this field will remain a desert. And this fundamentally is the biggest human conflict that a person will face within themselves. Why? Because the potential is there, and it is not being realized. Because you know this field should be anything but a desert. Because you know — because you know — that it has the potential to be the most beautiful, green, dense forest. Thriving.
